What Do Hedgehogs Like To Play With?

You have this cute, prickly, ball of quills, so naturally you wonder, “What do hedgehogs like to play with?” They aren't like dogs that can learn tricks or play fetch. Yet that doesn't mean that they don't enjoy playing. In fact, many hedgehogs enjoy solo play and some even like interactive play. So what do you buy them to play with? Quilly answers this question while Hazel (owned by Katrina Fidalgo) plays tug-o-war in the background. Thank you for allowing us to use Hazel in this video Katrina!

Here is the transcript for “What Do Hedgehogs Like To Play With?”:

Hey there hedgie fans!

One of the frequent questions that new hedgie owners ask is “What do hedgehogs like to play with?”

A favorite activity for us hedgies – aside from sleeping and eating – is running on a wheel. You can read about different types of hedgehog wheels on my site.

As for other types of toys, some hedgehogs don’t like to play with toys. Or they just haven’t been given something that they find stimulating.

There are many hedgehogs that ARE playful, though!

Since hedgehogs are natural foragers and we like to burrow, you can make hunting for bugs and worms more interesting by creating a dig box.

A dig box is a contained box – about the size of a shoe box will work – that has objects in it like balls, fleece strips, or cat toys. Some hedgie owners will put a combination of all of these in there.

And then what you do is put treats in the box so we can find them. It’s kind of like hide and seek, hedgie style!

Speaking of cat toys, many hedgehogs, like me, enjoy playing with crinkle balls and balls with bells in them. Sometimes toys that dangle and have an open bell at the bottom can be amusing too.

Please be careful that the toys you buy don’t have slots in them that are big enough to get our paws stuck or our jaws lodged in them.

Other toys that can be amusing for some hedgies are mirrors, treat balls, treat puzzles, and sometimes even a simple game of tug-o-war over a fleece strip.

My human also provides me with non-pvc tubes to crawl through and a fleece forest. She rotates things around so that I don’t get bored with the having the same activities all the time.

I’ll leave links below to some of my favorite toys and maybe your hedgehog will like playing with them too.

That’s all the time we have for this episode.
