So what presents do you buy for hedgehogs that don't get enjoyment out of playing? All you can really do is get them practical things they will use or gifts that will make their life more comfortable. We know. It sounds pretty boring, but it doesn't have to be. Some of our practical gift suggestions can spiff up their cage, provide them with a safer environment, or provide something yummy for their tummy.

The Lithuanian artist who makes these also does other colors and is very cooperative. We had to ask for the opening to be bigger because Quilly is a little roly-poly and she was totally accommodating! It'll take a while to get, but totally worth the wait. For those that like things to be more traditional or minimalist, the other caves make a great presents for hedgehogs too.

We've mentioned it before, so please forgive us if we're sounding like a broken record about cameras. We think one of the BEST practical presents for hedgehogs is a wi-fi camera to monitor their health and well-being. By recording them when you can't be there, it can give you critical information to provide to their veterinarian. A vet can only go by the vitals they measure and what you tell them. That is unless, you can give them video examples.

In the wild, hedgehogs naturally have forage and root for insects and food. In order to provide fun and enrichment that stimulates that instinct, we think a snuffle mat makes a fantastic present for hedgies. What we like about this particular one is that it comes in a variety of colors, sizes, and even weights. The only thing we wish it had was clip connectors to allow you to attach it to wire on cages. But even lacking that, you can compensate by getting a heavier weight.

Many hedgehog owners have reported that their hedgehogs love mint sticks as a fun toy. The mint attracts some hedgehogs and encourages playfulness. We say “some” because it's not always a hit with hedgies. We gave these to Quilly as a gift and he just ignored them. One night on the camera, we saw him pick it up and move it, so we were hopeful that he would play with it. Nope! He wasn't having it.

Don't let our fickle prickle dissuade you though. In the hedgehog communities, there are many that do enjoy it immensely. All you can do is try giving it to your hedgehog and see what happens.

This gift suggestion for your hedgehog is also based on that instinct to dig and burrow. Many people will make their own dig boxes, but not everyone has the time or inclination. These aren't that expensive when you consider the labor time it will take you to shop the materials and assemble it, in addition to the actual material cost. We're more in favor of spending snuggle time with our hedgehog than making things that we can purchase reasonably.

This snack and sniff ball is the gift that keeps on giving. The way this works is you unroll random fleece strips, roll a treat in the strips, and tuck the roll back in the hole it came out of. Your hedgie will have a blast sniffing out the goodies and being rewarded with the treats they find!
